Anna:

I agree with you on the point about learning Mandarin, but some foreigners, notably Jack Perkowski of Managing the Dragon, maintain they have done well without it. I'm happy for their success, but I would not give up my ability to speak, read and write Mandarin.

For their part, these businesspeople who have lived for years in China are often more senior managers who are well-funded by their respective MNCs or investors. They perhaps can better afford the expense of translators, bilingual staff, and such, but for a young entrepreneur, speaking the local language is a big time-saver and, I suspect, will help them achieve greater success in the future.

I also recommend learning Chinese online. The sites you mentioned are good starting points.

The entrepreneur who is going to be working small needs to learn to do things the Chinese way, which means not taking the front door (as Westerners do) but rather looking for the side door.

For one thing, learning Chinese (ChinesePod.com, www.zhongwenred.com) for another thing definitely (as was mentioned in this article) getting away from the big cities and the south of the country in general.

It seems like we live in an era of great risk...

Great post; I think this gives a good overview of the potential problems that can popup when foreigners want to start a small business in China. I agree with Lee about local firms; I think the best opportunity for small companies like IT firms is still outsourcing where you dont directly compete with local companies.
